Insomnia

The signs and symptoms of insomnia range from difficulty getting to sleep, frequent waking, not sleeping at all, fitful sleep and sometimes waking early and not getting back to sleep.  Night sweating, feeling hot at night, hot feet and or hands, anxiety, nightmares, night terrors that cause you to wake are all signs and symptoms of insomnia.

A chronic lack of sleep can become an an insidious cycle that can contribute to a variety of disharmonies.  Depression, Anxiety, Fatigue/Tiredness, Erratic mood swings to name a few.  

In Chinese Medicine insomnia is an indication that the Shen (spirit) is disturbed.  The Shen (spirit) is housed in the blood, when the shen becomes disturbed insomnia occurs.  Commonly this is due to blood deficiency, fluid loss (via blood and sweat), heat in the system, qi stagnation, kidney yin and or jing deficiency, phlegm harassing the heart, heart blood deficiency.  Other causes which may contribute to these patterns and insomnia arising are shock and inappropriate diet and lifestyle choices.

Treatment with Acupuncture and herbs to rebalance qi, tonify deficiencies, clear heat & blood stagnation and phlegm are utilised to treat the underlying causes. Points and treatment including diet and lifestyle recommendations are made according to your TCM differential diagnosis.
